OpenAI and Microsoft reportedly planning to build $100 billion AI supercomputer

Two of the biggest names in tech are teaming up to build a massive supercomputer.

The groundbreaking AI data center sounds like something from a sci-fi film, and is aptly named ‘Stargate’.

What’s also unprecedented is the new supercomputer’s cost, which will be 100 times more than the world’s current biggest data centers.

There’s no denying that Open AI is taking over the world of tech.

Its latest Chat-GPT model has shown incredible capabilities, able to sing, live translate two people talking, and solve math problems written on a piece of paper.

Best of all, these functions will soon be free to any user, even non-paying ones.

With all these capabilities, a monumental amount of storage space is required.

Open AI and Microsoft are planning to build their supercomputer in the next few years, which will power the next generation of AI systems.

Stargate will cover hundreds of acres of land and use up to 5 gigawatts of power.

It is likely the companies will have to resort to nuclear energy to power the awe-inspiring data center.

The Stargate supercomputer derives its name from the 1994 sci-fi film of the same title.

In it, archeologists discover a teleportation device that is described as the ‘key to the past, the door to the future, the passage to discovery’.

While it hasn’t been officially green-lit yet, the mega project is set to take between five and six years before completion.

Its price tag matches its scale, with Microsoft putting aside $100 billion for the job.

So far, it’s already invested $13 billion into Open AI as the organization already uses Microsoft’s data centers to power Chat-GPT.
