North Carolina man bid $3,000 for a disused LMTV truck but ended up with two

A North Carolina man has explained how he bought a disused Light Medium Tactical Vehicle (LMTV) online for $3,000 but then ended up with two. 

Stephen Myers spotted the 1995 Stewart & Stevenson M11081 LMTV cargo truck up for sale online. 

The old military vehicle was listed with a starting bid of just $3,000. 

However, after winning the auction, things didn’t quite go to plan and Myers somehow found himself with two LMTVs.

The LMTV truck was listed with a low starting price

When it comes to buying used vehicles online, there are some serious bargains to be had – such as this Bentley Continental GT that was sold for just $6,000 or this $15,000 yacht that was found on Facebook Marketplace.

However, before you make any purchases online, it pays to do your homework and check out exactly what you’re getting yourself into.

This is something Stephen Myers – from the This Week with Cars YouTube channel – found out for himself after he bid on a used LMTV and ended up owning two. 

In a video shared on his channel, Myers explained that he spotted the LMTV on GovPlanet – an auction site for surplus government vehicles – with a starting bid of just $3,000 back in July 2021 and decided to try his luck. 

As the only bidder, Myers won the auction – but when he looked into the shipping costs, he discovered it was more than the estimated cost on the listing. 

He also found out he needed to have an End Use Certificate that could take up to six months to approve. Ouch.

He then ended up with a second Light Medium Tactical Vehicle

As Myers wanted to take ownership of the LMTV before there was ‘snow on the ground’, he decided to try and track one down online.

He turned to Facebook Marketplace where he spotted another Light Medium Tactical Vehicle up for sale and snapped it up. 

Unfortunately, after driving his new truck for just 10 minutes, the LMTV broke down at the side of the road due to problems with its electrics. 

Myers set about repairing the truck by replacing the alternator and sorting out those battered electrics.

By this point, it’s October, and Myers’ End Use Certificate has been approved and he finally takes delivery of the truck he won in the auction.

The second truck arrived dead, but Myers was able to charge it and get it running – leaving him with two working LMTVs.

Myers noted that while the auction truck may have taken a while to arrive, when it did it was in a pretty good condition.

It was the LMTV he bought from Facebook Marketplace that caused him more issues and required more time to get up and running.
