Porsche tuner Singer is doing what it can to keep legendary California race track open to public

Singer, a tuning company that specializes in Porsche 911s, just bought Willow Springs International Raceway, a race track in California.

Singer did this for two reasons.

The first reason is simple, because it wanted a place where it could test the company’s cars.

The second, more romantic reason is that they simply wanted to save the track.

Why Singer bought the race track

Willow Springs is an historic race track in California.

It first opened in 1953, but even though motorsport fans love it, it’s been struggling to stay open for years.

The former owners, the Huth family, did everything they could to keep it alive but, at the same time, they also reportedly rejected a long list of bids.

Rumor has it they even received an offer from racing legend Ken Miles, which they refused, and then another, years later, for $100 million, and they once again said no.

Now, they’ve finally caved in and sold the track to Porsche tuner Singer.

We don’t know what’s going to happen next but we do know that, for now, events scheduled for the rest of the year will go forward as planned.

Can you actually buy a race track?

We tend to think of race tracks as unmovable and ownerless objects that always and will always be there, like the Eiffel Tower or the Colosseum, but that’s not the case.

Most race tracks, including some of the most famous ones, have private owners and, like everything else, they fall apart if they aren’t properly looked after.

And as you can see from the picture below, Willow Springs International Raceway, also known as Willow Springs Motorsports Park, takes a fair bit of looking after.

In theory, anybody with enough money can buy a race track, even YouTubers do that sometimes.

In practice, though, especially when it comes to iconic tracks such as Willow Springs, it takes more than a fat wallet and a smile in order to convince the owner to sell.

But we’re so glad they did.
