Saudi Arabia’s NEOM took to Instagram to share a long-awaited post regarding the ongoing progress of The Line – the horizontal skyscraper-style city in the middle of the desert.

And, as you can see from the clip, things are evolving pretty rapidly.

The Line is the headline act, sort of the hero image for the massive $1 trillion project Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is working on.

They call it ‘The Line’ because it is a city that extends horizontally and, once it’s done, it will more or less literally look a line when viewed from above.

The project was announced a year ago and even though we’d already seen updates, usually through drone footage, these updates came from ‘fans’ rather than from an official source.

The goal is to complete the project by 2030, and construction is well underway.

Designed by Santa Monica-based firm Morphosis Architects, the structure will be 105 miles (170 kilometers) long, 500 meters high and 200 meters wide.

The Line will be fully capable of supporting itself and provide a living space for up to nine million residents.

That equates to 8,350 acres or 13.5 square miles, making The Line larger than the Principality of Monaco and Gibraltar combined.

The city will include residential areas as well as commercial areas, along with its own stadium, a yacht marina, and other facilities like shopping malls and office spaces.

The Line will also have its own public transport system, making it possible to travel from one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes.

It’s a massive undertaking and yet, this is just one of several projects that NEOM is working on.

Aside from The Line, the other project that probably stands out a bit more when compared to the others is Aquellum, which is being referred to as an ‘upside-down skyscraper‘.

Imagine that.
